The Physical Therapy Assistant is assigned to the Physical Therapy Department within Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System. This position primarily serves veterans who are scheduled in outpatient clinics (face-to-face and virtual care). The primary duty station for this position is at the North Columbus GA Clinic (Employee will be required to report to Montgomery, AL and or Tuskegee, AL, for duty until completion of N. Columbus GA Clinic). Duties include but are not limited to: Clinical duties. The Physical Therapy Assistant: Measures patient's range of motion, length/girth of body parts, and monitors vital signs to determine effects of specific treatments or to assist primary PT with complex evaluations. Administers active, active assistive, and passive therapeutic exercises, therapeutic activities, and ADL activities. Instructs and assists patients in learning and improving functional activities such as pre ambulation, transfer training, ambulation training, and wheelchair management. Adjusts and trains in the use and care of orthotic devices, prostheses, supportive devices, and other specialized equipment for safe use in the home environment. Adapts or makes changes in procedures and approaches under the supervision of the primary PT. Makes recommendations to the primary PT and/or physician for new treatment procedures as indicated by patient's response. Recommendations include changes to rehabilitation treatment and advising the primary PT of patient progression /regression with the treatment plan. Assists with modalities as outlined in the treatment plan. Provides patient education to patients and their caregivers and serves as an active member in comprehensive inpatient and/or outpatient interdisciplinary team programs. Communicates with professional colleagues (e.g. administrative support staff, physicians, and nurses, etc.) to facilitate patient scheduling, and other patient care needs related to the overall treatment plan. The Physical Therapy Assistant will: Maintain computer proficiency skills for the completion of online training requirements and for participation in virtual meetings as directed by Supervisor. Adhere to all patient care-related documentation requirements, including billing and coding, as outlined by medical center guidelines.
