The Radiology Resource Nurse (RRN) is a registered nurse who acts as a clinical liaison between VUH patient care areas and the Department of Radiology. The RRN applies the nursing process to provide continuity of care while a patient is in the Department of Radiology for an imaging encounter.
The RRN is responsible for collaborating with the health care team through assessment and observation of/for:
Potential instability or a change in condition
Maintain infection control measures
Contrast allergy response management per protocol
Assessment of intravenous access and complications such as infiltrations
Facilitate communication between radiology staff, radiologists, and inpatient care teams
Assist with patient throughput.
Shift responsibilities :
Receive handover from previous shift RRN
Perform walk-through to survey and be available to all diagnostic patients in Department of Radiology (VUH);
Round with Radiology technical team for patients in the eStar depot for planned or scheduled inpatient imaging appointments [modalities: MRI, CT (main and ED), U/S, PET, fluoro, Nuclear Medicine]
In collaboration with Radiology technical team, establishes team approach to monitoring of all patients in the department and acts as a resource to maintain standard of care while patient is in the Department of Radiology that is consistent with inpatient unit standards.
Patient Categories/Levels of Care:
Surveillance (Low Risk) : RRN provides intermittent surveillance of patients who are transferred to Radiology while waiting for/after and undergoing imaging; examples include:
Patients who have received medication for acute procedural anxiety congruent with Transport of Patients policy criteria;
Patients who have pain and received pre-imaging medication to provide analgesia relief to complete imaging congruent with Transport of Patients policy criteria;
Patients complaining of pain who need assessed before returning to unit;
Patients with IV medications infusing;
Patients with supportive care such as oxygen;
Observation (Intermediate Risk) : RRN provides visual observation at appropriate intervals of patients who are transferred to Radiology congruent with Transport of Patients policy criteria while waiting for/after and undergoing imaging, examples include:
Patients on telemetry where patients can be monitored by telemetry; the RRN and telemetry tech confirm transmission of cardiac monitoring and whom to contact if there is a change in cardiac rhythm;
Patients on a PCA or medication infusions such as heparin
Patients on IV infusions that need to switch to the MRI safe pumps;
Patients who receive oral anxiolytics (i.e. Valium 10 mg. orally) in Radiology;
Patients cognitively impaired;
Patients deemed to be intermediate risk by nurse assessment;
Monitoring (High Risk)
Patients requiring one-to-one monitoring will be provided by bedside nurse unless coverage by RRN is pre-arranged and formal handover is complete;
Patients whose condition changes to high risk from low or intermediate while in the Radiology Department, RRN intervenes and provides one-to-one monitoring until formal handover is completed with patient's unit nurse or Rapid Response Team.
Partner with unit nurses/paramedics who are in Radiology accompanying patients who meet Transport of Patients policy criteria to provide continuity of care and support.
Perform REDCap data collection
End of shift handover to oncoming shift RRN
Collaborates in establishing the plan of care, coordinates and implements care delivery while anticipating patient care needs across the continuum.
Analyzes comprehensive information pertinent to the patient's care and management to determine nursing diagnosis.
Continually utilizes the nursing process to evaluate patient's progress towards goals and applies appropriate interventions to ensure effective outcomes.
Employs strategies to promote health and a safe and healthy environment.

Graduate of an approved discipline specific program (or equivalent experience) and 1 year relevant experience
