Incumbent serves as an Outpatient Pharmacy Technician (OPT) with responsibility of performing duties at various clinics within VASNHS and OPT may rotate on regular basis or as required. Incumbent may work evenings, weekends and holidays as priorities demonstrate a need. Employees at this grade level serve as pharmacy technicians under the supervision of registered pharmacists. Responsible for all activities and functions generated by his/her assigned section on a day-to-day basis. Duties include but not limited to: Dispensing Activities a) Supports and ensures the Service and Medical Center policies, procedures and guidelines, government regulations, and profession/technical standards concerning drug control, drug security, and drug accountability (including medical supplies) are maintained at all times. b) May be the first line of communications between the Service and patient, caregivers, clinical staff or administrative staff to service patients' needs either in person or by phone. He/she may answer routine questions regarding availability of drugs and dosage forms as indicated. Questions pertaining to professional areas such as chemistry, pharmacology, clinical needs of patients and specific or complex drug information will be referred to a pharmacist. The attitude, conduct, and appearance and work performance of the technician will contribute positively to the successful operations and efficiency of the Service c) Performs pharmacy technician functions that require an application of routine knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices. Fills orders accurately, selecting a drug product prescribed by its trade or generic name, and assembles completed orders for pharmacist review and check. Filling orders involves counting, prepackaging, reconstituting, measuring and selecting required medication items or components, and labeling with prescription label and appropriate auxiliary labels. If the item is not immediately available in the requested amount or strength, takes appropriate action to notify procurement staff as well as the patient/provider when necessary d) Operates and provides routine stocking and maintenance of automated dispensing devices and software (ScriptPro, Pyxis, BoxPicker, TCGRx Dispense, etc) to facilitate timely and accurate pharmacy dispensing. Follows all guidelines and procedures to access the automated dispensing, data collection and documentation, and patient safety features of the systems e) Provides medication distribution services in assigned area which may include outpatient window dispensing and automatic dispensing systems and filling and shipping of medication orders to State Nursing Home. f) Provides training and orientation and oversight to lower level technicians and new employees, students, and volunteers in the technical aspects of pharmacy dispensing. g) Under the guidance of the Controlled Substance Technician fills orders for controlled substances according to Federal, State, Medical Center, and Service regulations and policies and procedures governing the security and dispensing of controlled substances. Telephone Advice/Administrative Duties: a) Receives telephone calls from patients through the automated call distribution system. Answers patient inquiries related to process questions. Refers clinical and other judgmental questions to higher level technicians or pharmacists as appropriate. Documents patient interactions and communicates with providers in EHR when necessary. b) Provides patient education via telephone on the medication refill process, use of automated telephone system and general information on outpatient services. c) Uses pharmacy information systems such as VistA & EHR to retrieve patient information appropriately when needed to answer patient inquiries.
