Provide professional medical direction and leadership for the adult inpatient Mental Health & Addiction programs of M Health Mental Health & Addiction Services. Work in collaboration with the Mental Health & Addiction Services chief physician and administrative leadership to develop a market-leading Mental Health & Addiction program offering that advances clinical care, research and education. Work collaboratively with M Health Fairview system service line leadership to achieve the service line vision and goals. Partner with administrative leadership to maintain and constantly improve the provision of high-quality, patient centered care. Lead by example and engage physicians and staff in creating a positive work environment that values excellence, teamwork and constantly strives to exceed patient and family expectations.
Graduate of an accredited ACGME/AOA residency training program in this specialty for this position
BC/BE with the ABMS or AOA
Licensed or ability to obtain Minnesota Board of Medical Practice Licensure
Ability to obtain and /or maintain DEA certification for the State of Minnesota
Meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges (if required)
3+ years as a leader in a large care delivery system
Demonstrated experience in strategic and operational leadership, managing large scale projects and programs aimed at program development and growth strategies
Experience with managing physician practices, including service and quality performance, and productivity
Demonstrated success in delivering results within available resources
Extensive experience working in a collaborative manner with physicians, clinicians, staff and other leaders; must have examples of successful collaborative efforts
In partnership with the M Health Mental Health & Addiction Services Leadership Team, the Adult Inpatient Services Medical Director will:
Assist in creating an environment which supports innovation and diversity in inpatient psychiatric practice and overall interdisciplinary collaboration by embedding the culture and priorities of M Health as delineated by the Boards of Directors.
Serve as a role model in setting a standard of practice and in supporting M Health Fairview initiatives, goals and values.
Partner with dyad administrative leads within the service line or program, to implement organizational policies and guidelines and to understand and break through barriers to their implementation and compliance.
Collaborate with service line leadership to ensure the inpatient care programs are positioned to achieve growth goals.
Communicate with other physicians in the inpatient Mental Health & Addiction programs regarding organizational goals, plans and initiatives.
Identify annual goals that support organizational strategic plan and objectives for inpatient adult psychiatric services in key areas of focus (Experience, Excellence, and Engagement) in collaboration with programming director, nursing manager and operations vice president.
Collaborate with administrative leadership to ensure an exceptional patient experience. Develop a patient-centered, service driven culture and ensure physician, provider and staff behaviors are aligned to achieve exceptional results for patients/families.
Implement and champion the M Health Clinic Operating Principles.
Implement established evidence-base standards for patient centered care. Act as chief liaison to the appropriate outpatient and child and adolescent medical directors to foster patient care coordination.
In partnership with the M Health Mental Health & Addiction Services administrator & operations service line executive dyad leadership team:
Ensure adequate physician and midlevel staffing within inpatient practice service sites. Participate actively in physician and mid-level recruitment and retention initiatives.
Actively participate in the identification and resolution of issues raised by staff (e.g. medical, resident, nursing or other health care team members) and patients/families.
Role model and promote appropriate resource utilization including but not limited to human resources, facilities, equipment, technology and supplies.
Work with site administrative leadership to pro-actively address patient concerns and complaints.
Participate in final hiring decisions regarding key inpatient personnel (i.e. physicians, managers, supervisors).
Mentor and support the development of physicians and providers based at the site.
Ensure a welcoming and supportive environment for initial on-boarding and orientation.
Provide guidance, advice, encouragement and support to new provider hires to build a successful practice and to establish strong referral relationships as part of the larger group.
Meet individually with new physicians and providers during their first two years of practice to assess progress, provide mentorship, and assure personal development goals are on track.
Conduct annual performance reviews in collaboration with the service line administrator.
Address any performance concerns by establishing performance improvement plans. Manage iCares.
Ensure schedule for the inpatient service is maintained and services are provided effectively, including call coverage.
Resolve conflicts with provider schedules.
Ensure that call and coverage expectations are clearly communicated to all physicians and providers.
Ensure that a transparent process is in place for request and approval of vacation and CME absences, and design to minimize disruption to patient access and daily inpatient operations.
Participate in problem solving and resolution of issues when there are concerns that policies, practices or guidelines undermine patient care.
Work to build and maintain a collaborative clinical trials process across inpatient practice service sites and engage with other physicians to develop a successful approach.
Partner with inpatient MD program manager, psychiatrist lead and director of operations to drive efficient patient flow using new workflows and technology.
Address patient access, bed utilization, coding concerns, safety issues, staffing level, budget resources/utilization and capital equipment planning, personnel performance, and revenue projections.
Conduct periodic interdisciplinary staff meetings, addressing critical success factors, quality indicators, financial performance, and feedback from team members.
Meet regularly with Mental Health & Addiction Services physician chief, service line dyad partners and appropriate clinical and administrative staff. Actively participate in relevant inpatient and system-wide Mental Health and Addiction Services meetings.
Lead and/or participate in initiatives that drive improvement of safety, quality, patient/family experience, total cost of care and growth.
Actively support and engage in service line to establish best-practice, care coordination, care management, including the use of clinical guidelines/protocols.
Provide clinical expertise and guidance in the areas applicable to the inpatient services.
Provide assistance and advisement for regulatory compliance issues.
Attend the safety call/huddle at least once per week.
Liaison with appropriate academic divisions to ensure engagement between academic divisions and clinical care teams.
Respect and represent ALL members of the health care team that work in the inpatient Mental Health & Addiction programs in caring for patients and families.
Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork skills.
Demonstrate the elements of the desired organizational culture during patient care and in working with the inter-professional team.
Demonstrate the ability to balance and support decisions of the organization that may conflict with individual goals or specific service line/inpatient service requests.
