As a key leader in business and operational planning, the Director of Planning and Business Development is a highly-engaged and visible leader who is focused on supporting the organization’s success and growth across the continuum of care and throughout Valley Health’s service area. The Director maintains primary “ownership” for assigned large scale or high profile projects and supervises subordinate Planning and Business Development Managers with responsibility for a portfolio of work which includes planning, market research, market share and demographic reporting, business development and business planning, community health/ community benefit analysis and reporting, and certificate of public need analysis, application and monitoring.
Ensuring that opportunities for growth have leadership “buy-in” and are well aligned with the System’s strategic plan, the Director communicates regularly with clinical and executive leadership, including spending considerable time in the field, to conduct assessments, determine market needs, develop plans, and promote physician alignment.
Reporting to the VHS Vice President, Strategic Services, the incumbent is responsible for collaborating with health system leaders in the development, analysis, and implementation of strategic initiatives and coordinating a comprehensive growth strategy for Valley Health System. She/he identifies national, regional, and local growth opportunities with outside provider groups, health systems, and other potential partners. She/he will work collaboratively with other stakeholders to collect and analyze data and create business development plans.
The Director, and the business development team, makes the “business case” for new and expanded initiatives, not only through providing market research, predictive models, value added analytics and data analysis, but also by being a proactive partner -- having a stake in the ultimate return on investment and operational excellence of each entity or service.
The Director supports the development of entity and system-wide business development and strategic plans, as well as ongoing market analysis and planning activities. Planning activities include facilitating the development of the annual operating plan, conducting and analyzing market research to develop strategy in collaboration with organizational management. Additionally, the Director coordinates COPN applications to ensure consistency and timeliness in responses to regulatory agencies and monitors COPN activity in tri-state area.
The Director, Planning and Business Development supervises the physician relations representatives and is responsible for implementation of strategies to improve physician relations and enhance service offerings to the communities we serve.
The ideal candidate will have earned a master’s degree in Business Administration or related field. The candidate will have seven years’ experience in hospital and/or ambulatory operations, with at least three years of management experience in business development. Candidates with experience in community and/or academic health systems, where demonstrated relationships with physicians and the community are paramount, will be highly valued.

Able to navigate in a complex work environment. Excellent project management skills with demonstrated record of accomplishment. Able to leverage internal and external data resources. Computer proficiency to include MS Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Ability to prioritize, to work on projects concurrently and to meet deadlines. Must be a dynamic leader and self-starter with exceptional organizational and written and oral communication skills.
