Advanced Practice Registered Nurses / Physician Assistants
Performs diagnostic and related tasks to allow the anesthesiologists, CRNAs, surgeons and their team to extend services in the rendering of quality surgical/medical care. Assesses the physical status and potential surgical risk factors of patients presenting for surgery by means of interview, health history and physical examination and diagnostic tests. Interprets data, develops and implements plans of care to minimize those risk factors pre-surgically, in collaboration with the supervising anesthesiologist, the patient's surgeon, and the patient's PCP or an internist from GMC's General Internal Medicine (GIM) clinic. This role, undertaken in cooperation with Pre-Surgery Center nursing staff, the patient's surgeon and/or surgical clinic staff, and the GMC General Internal Medicine Clinic staff may include triage and risk assessment, telephone communication and patient education.
Manages nursing personnel and operational related activities in assigned clinic area using diverse skills in leadership, communication, human resource and financial management. Assures adherence to the requirements mandated by JCAHO, Department of Health, Quality Improvement and Infection Control. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on the assigned clinical area.
Performs duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize patient satisfaction.
Reports administratively to the Operations Director, Anesthesiology, and is supervised clinically by the Pre-Surgery Center's Physician Director (an anesthesiologist).
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*1. Performs and records historical and physical examination data.
*2. Reviews all appropriate historical records (previous anesthesia and surgery information), laboratory and other diagnostic studies.
*3. Clearly discriminates between normal and abnormal findings when evaluating the historical, physical examination, laboratory and other diagnostic study data as related to pre-anesthesia guidelines.
*4. Identifies patient problems and assists with the development of further evaluation plans and treatment modalities in concert with the anesthesiologist, the patient's surgeon (on occasion), PCP (on occasion), internists from GMC General Internal Medicine (GIM) Clinic, the patient and the family.
*5. As requested by the anesthesiologist, requests services of support systems, either outpatient or inpatient, provided by GHS.
*6. In concert with the anesthesiologist, writes orders for appropriate laboratory, X-ray or other diagnostic studies and consultations.
*7. Provides on going health education as directed by the anesthesiologist for patient and family members.
*8. Communicates to patients and family members, in language they can understand, information regarding the patient's upcoming surgical experience, pre-operative preparations, and post-operative information related to the patient's recovery.
*9. Maintains open communication with staff encouraging their participation in clinic activities.
*10. Serves as a role model in the delivery of quality patient care.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Degree of professional training to qualify as a nurse practitioner, both professionally and legally, to perform services indicated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and the licensure, as described in the policy and procedure manual for utilization of nurse practitioners within GHS required.
Previous experience with Epicare patient record preferred.
Previous experience with preoperative and postoperative patients and /or medical /surgical adult patients preferred.
