Performs technical and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory.
Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing and transporting specimens. Maintains equipment and adequate stock of supplies. Maintains work area in a safe, aseptic and organized manner. Performs clerical duties which may include but are not limited to answering phones, data entry, and filing. Performs standard venipuncture techniques (Vacutainer, Syringe, Butterfly, Capillary-Heel/Finger) while adhering to policies regarding collection sites. Collects and labels specimens following established protocols â�� including but not limited to specimen tube types, draw order, blood draw volume, comments, etc. Processes all specimens delivered to laboratory via couriers, nursing personnel, pneumatic tube systems, outpatient personnel and laboratory personnel. Coordinates distribution of all specimens to ensure smooth patient transition and/or delivery of services. Adheres to chemistry and hematology procedures - chemistry centrifuge operation, Chem/Hemo STAT/Routine tube racks, urine gray top tube/culture procedure. Prepares blood, urine, and other body fluid specimens for storage or transport using appropriate preservation method.
Qualifications: LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Required: Current Basic Life Support (BLS). Preferred: American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent that meets Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements for position.
EDUCATION: Required: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D.). Preferred: Associates Degree in related field, including externship.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Required: Externship or six (6) months hospital laboratory experience. Preferred: One (1) year of hospital related experience.
