The Department of Infectious Disease at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seeking a Staff Scientist to contribute to projects that use a systems biology approach to study interactions between the human microbiome and myelodysplastic syndrome.
The incumbent will be primarily responsible for developing and implementing metagenomics analysis pipelines in a high-performance computing environment. The responsibilities include: assembly of metagenomic sequence data into microbial genomes, optimizing metagenomic assembly pipelines, prediction of metabolic capability from metagenomics data, and driving innovative analysis through the use of machine learning and -omics data integration techniques.
Contribute to bioinformatics pipelines for metagenomics and metatranscriptomics data analysis.
Make use of automated workflows for Next-generation sequencing (NGS) QC and analysis.
Process Metagenomics and RNA-seq datasets using established bioinformatics pipelines.
Participate in the innovation, design, and development of statistical and analytical solutions.
Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team of biologists and clinicians to implement data analysis and data integration solutions.
Education, Skills, and Experience:
Qualified candidates must have at least a doctorate degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Biology or a related field.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in bioinformatics or statistical analysis is preferred.
Proficient in Unix, and a programming language such as Perl/Java/Python and shell scripting.
Able to work in a Linux computing environment
Strong experience in the following areas:
Understanding of bioinformatics principles, data analysis and integration styles.
Extensive experience in Next-Generation Sequencing data analysis.
Hands on experience in high-throughput RNA-seq, Metagenomics, and/or Metabolomics data analysis.
Experience in building bioinformatics pipelines for genome assembly and annotation.
Ability to perform root-cause analysis and work with a team of multidisciplinary scientists to drive problem resolution.
