Job Summary The INTERPRETER II facilitates communication between the medical/non-medical personnel and patients/patients' families with limited English proficiency to identify needs/concerns relative to the hospital experience. They will assess and monitor patients' understanding of information conveyed to insure that the provider fully understands patient's history and condition and the patient understands all aspects the diagnosis, treatment plan, and prognosis. Effectively interprets both receptively and expressively, using any necessary specialized vocabulary. Assists staff in understanding cultural factors that impact diagnosis and treatment.
Receives and processes requests for interpretation services. Provides interpretation services via telephone conference calling and individual patient interviews in a variety of care settings. Answers, screens, prioritizes incoming telephone calls; assists caller or routes caller to appropriate person or department. Maintains confidentiality of information. Provides courteous, appropriate and prompt information and assistance to all appropriate hospital departments and outside agencies.
Operates computerized dispatching system following established protocol. Immediately reports system malfunctions. Responds to customer requests with a high level of professionalism on the telephone or via two-way radio. Maintains composure and demonstrates a compassionate and pleasant manner at all times. Ensures proper communication and timely information to the provider on the interpreter's status or estimated wait time.
Monitors status of interpreting encounters. Verifies locations, department extension, medical providers name and nature of the request to help prioritize the call. Must be able to anticipate the length of time the interpreting encounter will take.
Explains medical procedures to patients and obtains necessary medical information needed to perform exams/procedures as directed.
Assists with answering calls for PBX, patient dining, and the Service Center. Provides bilingual assistance via telephone for any patient or customer upon request.
Maintains proficiency of interpretation standards through on-going education programs, workshops, training, etc.
Keeps abreast of changes, improvements, advances in the medical field, procedures, medications and its equivalent terminology in Spanish.
