The New Orleans VA Medical Center isopening a new, state-of-the-art tertiary care facility in December 2016, andseeking a Physician (Dermatology - Chief). Candidates must have experience and be actively involved in the broad aspects of dermatology care, including dermatological surgery. Responsibilities include building a new program and dermatology service for the new facility, patient care, and supervising students, residents, fellows and allied health professionals. The preferred candidate will be board certified in dermatology. Candidates must be comfortable with the range of skin disease found in ambulatory dermatology as well as consulting on inpatients. Candidates must also show evidence of competent leadership effectiveness and professionalism.
The Chief of Dermatology coordinates the clinical rotations and oversees the education and training of rotating medical students and residents. The Chief ensures that the residents receive strong clinical training in all aspects of dermatology. The incumbent facilitates opportunities for research by members of the dermatology service and must meet the criteria for faculty appointments at the two medical affiliates, LSU and Tulane.
The Chief of Dermatology reports to the Chief of Staff and is a member of the Medical Executive Committee. The incumbent should have administrative experience in dermatology. The incumbent oversees the dermatology Service quality improvement program. The incumbent reviews clinical privileges for dermatology staff, and pay for performance assessment and takes responsibility for recommending actions necessary to assure staff compliance with Medical Staff By-Laws, and relevant facility policies and regulations. The incumbent participates in budgetary planning for the dermatology service.
TOUR OF DUTY: Monday-Friday & Weekends, Days - 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Other Shifts, as needed (Rotating Shifts).

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with section A, chapter 3, paragraph 3g, this part.)
Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
(3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Service Chief or Line Manager. A Service Chief or Line Manager physician must demonstrate the following:
(a) Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty;
(b) Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These programs would include, but are not limited to medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, quality and performance improvement.
Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
English Language Proficiency.
Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Qualifying Factor: Successful completion of post graduate residency program in
Dermatology approved by the Accrediting Council for Graduate Medical Education or its equivalent.
Senior Grade. Meet the requirements for Intermediate grade and have demonstrated recognized professional attainment such as:
(1) Past or present faculty appointment in an approved medical school or
(2) Completion of an accredited residency in the specialty area to which the individual is being assigned or in a related area, or
(3) Current eligibility to sit for the board certification examination in the specialty area to which the individual is being assigned or in a related area, or
(4) Comparable achievements in clinical, educational, administrative or research activities.

Physical Requirements: A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD: This position requires completion of an initial two (2) - year probationary period, if not already served. Also, this position requires completion of an initial one (1) - year supervisory/managerial probationary period, if not already served.
