Primary duties and responsibilities for all PAs include, but are not limited to:
*Provide advanced level care for Veteran patients, sometimes under the review and/or co-signature of a physician.
*Assess and diagnosepatients' conditions through history taking, record reviews, physical examinations, treatment plans, etc.
*Write orders for diagnostic testing including laboratory, X-rays, imaging studies/EKGs, ventilator management, blood and urine tests and any other special testing and studies whenever indicated.
*Prescribe medications, and provide education and counseling to Veterans and their families regarding medical condition, prescribed treatments and drugs, diagnostic options, review of treatment plans, discussions of patient goals, etc. for patients to attain optimum physical, physiological, sociological and psychological balance within the limitations imposed by their illnesses.
*Establish professional working relationship with clinical service providers within the medical center, Outpatient Clinics (OPCs), and the Community Base Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), provide telephone consultation, screen consults for appropriate and timely care prior to scheduling and communicate with inpatient multidisciplinary team members, such as pharmacy, dietary, IT, lab, other specialists/providers.
*Work independently and demonstrate expertise in judgment, as allowed by VA policies, with delegated prescriptive authority for appropriate classes of medications.
* Provide patient care in accordance with professional standards, core values and commitment to service excellence.
Additional duties specificto this position include, but are not limited to:
*Provide day-time,night-time, and weekend inpatient care for surgical patients (majority of patients are general surgery, vascular surgery, orthopedic and urology).
*Primary responsibility will be to care for patients in the surgical intensive care and inpatient units.
*Evaluate new surgical consults from other inpatient services and/or the emergency room.
*Admission history and physical and orders, daily rounds, electronic record entry of progress note discharge and transfer summaries, collaboration with surgery attendings and resident staff in providing inpatient and critical care.
*Perform minor procedures such as central venous access, tube thoracotomy placement, and arterial line placement for which PA is credentialed and in compliance with the agreed upon care plan with the attending or managing physician.
Work Schedule: Shifts aregenerallyrotating 12 hour shifts on weekends and variable tours Monday through Thursday to include day, evening, and night tours. Some flexibility is available in tour; however, evening,night, and weekend tours are expected.Additional day shift hours will be available to provide first assistance in the OR when needed. Hours may vary depending on the needs of the service and patient care. (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on patient care needs.)

Education. The candidate must meet all of the following:
(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; AND
(2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
(1) Current and continuous certificationby the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment in VHA.
(2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5.
English Language Proficiency. Physician Assistants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).

All primary care PAs must have and maintain current AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION BLS certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: ThePhysician Assistantshould be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to4 hours)walking (up to 2 hours),heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.
