The Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist manages the testing staff in the Automated Chemistry and Urinalysis technical sections of the UCDH Clinical Pathology Laboratory, following all Departmental and governing organizations polices and guidelines, and ensures effective and efficient operations of the sections testing performance. The Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist also oversees staff training and competency, investigates problems, makes operational decisions within the department and coordinates with other areas of the laboratory.
Possesses California State issued Clinical Laboratory Scientist license, (current and renewed every two years as required), preferred minimum of four (4) years of supervisory clinical laboratory science experience in Automated Chemistry in a large hospital laboratory setting.
Possesses technical knowledge of Chemistry and Urinalysis testing procedures and pre-analytical processes, policies and procedures as necessary for the supervision of this specialty laboratory section.
Knowledge of hospital and laboratory regulations and requirements (e.g. CDPH, CAP, TJC, AABB, FDA, NAACLS, FACT, OSHA) for testing and laboratory safety.
Technical knowledge and/or experience with Point of Care Testing (POCT)
Possesses effective written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of safety policies and procedures, occupational hazards, and safety precautions, including Department and UCDHS Infection Control policies and procedures including Standard Precautions procedures.
Knowledge of Hospital and Laboratory Information System (LIS), EMR, hospital Incident Report System (e.g. RL Solutions), email, Internet, Microsoft Office and data management software.
Excellent interpersonal and team management skills to effectively collaborate with physicians, technologists, nursing and other staff.
Excellent problem solving skills and utilizes resources effectively for resolution.
Ability to timely manage staff with fairness and respect, and follow the Principles of Community.
Knowledge of employee progressive disciplinary steps, Collective Bargaining Agreements and human resources Leaves of Absence (i.e., FMLA, KinCare, Workers Compensation, etc.).
Ability to work productively in a busy and complex environment, meet deadlines and to remain flexible within a variety of changing demands.
Ability to manage several projects or tasks simultaneously and to exercise appropriate judgment when setting priorities.
