Performs the primary functions of an RN in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of all assigned patients of the unit during his/her shift. Is responsible for meeting the established neonatal and perinatal standards of nursing practice, for managing all assigned personnel, supplies and equipment on the unit and for promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of other departments. Demonstrates the ability to function independently with only occasional or limited supervision. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Required - graduate from an accredited school of nursing with an ADN, 3-year diploma or equivalent, BSN or advanced degree; current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Colorado; CPR required by completion of unit-specific orientation and before working independently. NRP required within 6 months of employment. Biannual attendance at CPR and NRP required.
Experience: No requirement for RN I. One year of experience preferred for RN II in postpartum, newborn nursery and Level II or III nursery.
Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities: Pursues programs of continuing education to maintain clinical expertise and expand knowledge base or skills related to areas of responsibility. Attends mandatory inservices as required by Platte Valley Medical Center. Meets requirement of 80% attendance of staff meetings per year and mandatory inservices as schedule dictates. Demonstrates computer competency. Completes department orientation guide. Verbalizes knowledge of Hospital/Department Mission, Process Improvement plan and department Quality Indicators. Participates in hospital PI process. Participates in a minimum of one PI study, CQI team or project per year. This job may require the employee to be responsible for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients of all ages, including neonate, child, adolescent, and geriatric. Consequently, the employee must be competent in the interpretation of a patient's self-report or behavior, and this information must be interpreted with an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process. The treatment of patients should be individualized and should reflect an understanding of the developmental needs and range of treatment needs for each patient. (See "Competency Assessment" policy)
